Dear Editor,

Chuck Colson (Evangelical Drift, April) worries that evangelicalism has become watered down, citing David Brooks. He'll feel better if he consults Richard John Neuhaus (First Things, March, 2004, p. 55), who begs to differ. In a nutshell, Brooks and Wolfe are out of their league when trying to comprehend American religion, but anxious to reassure their "enlightened and mainly secular readership ... that the 'religious right' is largely a myth and that religion in the public square is really quite harmless." To accept their perspective is to buy into the "liberal history lesson" (see "The Theme is Freedom" by M. Stanton Evans) that secular enlightenment, not religious faith, founded and sustains America. Beware of asking the fox how the hens are doing.
