October 2001

Sent 7 Oct 2001, in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, in response to the monthly question "What should be the libertarian foreign policy position in 100 words or fewer?" (not published).

Schoolyard Bullies

Libertarians (properly) subject government to the same moral guidelines as individuals. OK then, here's the situation in a nutshell. The world is a schoolyard, populated with friends and bullies. Is it always correct not to intervene? No. If you keep your head down and your mouth shut, will the bullies leave you alone? No. Is it better to be big and strong (but therefore a target)? Yes. Is it important to stand for something? Yes. Should we choose our fights carefully? Yes.

Steve Sawyer

I also really like President George W. Bush's statements: "We must call evil by its name" and "Evil is real and must be opposed."
